I am so sorry for your loss of your mother. I have known her since we were in graduate school at the same time at Penn State. I've kept in touch with her over the years because I'm a member of Kappa Omicron Nu and we were both members of AAFCS. Then in the 1980s, I stayed with her for a week or two at a time several times a year for several years while I was working on a research project at MSU. Your mother was such a good professional with very high standards, great ideas, and dedication extraordinaire. You can be so proud of her as she was proud of both of you. Many, many people will miss her dearly.
I do hope these works are some comfort to you.

Dorothy was, is and will always be an inspiration for me. Without her influence, advice and encouragement, I would not be the same person. Knowing her was a blessing. What she did for the profession of home economics and the human sciences has influenced the world.

Dear Mitstifer Family,
What a painful loss for all of you to bear. Dorothy was such an accomplished lady who touched the lives of so many over the years. She certainly left you with an amazing legacy. As you cherish your precious memories of her please reflect on the words of Jesus at John 5:28,29. This passage assures us of the resurrection. What a wonderful time that will be when our tears of grief will be transformed into tears of joy. This sure hope was guaranteed by our loving Heavenly Father Jehovah through his son Jesus Christ. May you find comfort in this gift at this difficult time in your lives.

My condolences to all Dorothy's family. I went to high school in Genesee with Dorothy and she was one of my best friends. She, June and I were a threesome. I know you must be so proud of all of her accomplishments. My heart goes out to all of you. She will be missed by many.
Love and prayers,
Regina Haxton

I was a high school classmate of Dorothy's. The one thing I really remember about her is she never got mad and seldom flustered. She was full of fun and her mother used to say she thought after an event Dorothy and I had attended, we had more fun talking about the event than the event itself. Our fathers were very lenient about us driving each other of our father's cars if we did go to a dance, for example, and one of came home with a guy. Luckily, we never liked the same guys. I will miss her at our high school reunions where I used to con her into helping me although she was not on the reunion committee. My guess is when she is looking down at us now, she is saying 'get on with your lives. When you join me, we can continue talking about things as we used to.' We did not lose contact over the years.

Dr. Mitstifer will be sorely missed by everyone who knew her. She was a wonderful mentor, scholar, researcher, teacher, and most of all, a wonderful, kind and loving friend. I will never forget how she made me and my parents feel so welcomed at my Kappa Omicron Nu (KON) initiation ceremony. I will also never forget our trips together on the Amtrak train to Chicago for our KON board meeting. We shared laughter and stories that will forever be with me. I will miss her companionship and her sense of humor. She brought joy to all who were close to her.
