Rodney Lee Morton, 81, of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, passed away on May 16, 2026 at his home after a short illness. He was born in 1945 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Daniel and Naomi Morton.
Rod prided himself on being a good friend and on doing things for the people in his life. He was constantly reminding his daughter on the importance of friendship. “I have a lot of friends Laura. When you’re good to people they’re good to you back,” he’d say.
He grew up in Bucks County and attended William Tennent High School, Northwestern University and The University of Maryland. Drafted into the Marine Corps during Vietnam, his computer skills, rare at the time, kept him working in Washington, DC. After his active duty, he began working with Decision Systems as a software programmer building and running the algorithms used for Marine Corps manpower planning. He continued this work for 43 years until his retirement.
Rod was an avid hunter and, since childhood, his favorite time of the year was opening day of deer rifle season in Troy. Rod was also a competitive precision shooter, making guns for himself and for his friends. Rod could also fix practically anything. He had a full metal and woodworking shop at his home and loved helping neighbors with home repairs. If he couldn’t fix it, he likely had a friend who knew how.
A man of deep and unwavering faith, Rod was anxious to get to heaven and surprised even his hospice nurses with how assured he was that he was headed to a better place.
He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Hope Morton, his daughter Laura Morton, and his brother Gary Morton.
The funeral service to celebrate Rod’s life will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday, May 24, 2026 at Mount Pisgah Wesleyan Church, 6346 Berwick Turnpike, Columbia Cross Roads, PA 16914. There will be no viewing or visitation prior. Burial will follow in Wetona Cemetery with military rites given by the US Marine Corps Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, Rod requested donations be sent to Mount Pisgah Wesleyan Church, 6346 Berwick Turnpike, Columbia Cross Roads, PA 16914 or Lon Solomon Ministries.
