JACK MILLER LONG

Aug. 28, 1933 – Aug. 3, 2024

Whistling from Heaven

“That unless there’s a boy there a-whistling, its music will not be complete.” – Unknown, Harper’s Magazine 1877

Jack Miller Long, 90 of Troy, PA was a devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, fondly called “Papa Jack”. He passed away on Aug 3, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. Married at 24, he and his wife Barb first lived in Carrolton, OH. They moved twice to follow his career with Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co. They first moved to Leicester, NY before finally settling in Troy, PA. Each time they moved, they built a strong home for themselves and their girls. Jack could often be heard whistling a tune or singing a made-up song. He had a devilish smile and always had a joke ready. You might have gotten your nose tweaked a time or two, and he was quick to give you a funny nickname.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Barbara Ann Long (née Chenot), his parents Kermit and Lesta Long (née Buehler), as well as his in-laws Arthur and Esther Chenot (née Bixler), brother Dick (wife Darlene), sisters Kathy Saltzman (husband Bill), Margie Hobson, Marilyn Zocholl (husband Tom), brother-in-law Dick Leslie, and special sister-in-law Marie Poffek.

He is survived by his daughters Justine (husband Atty. Jonathan Foster), Jana (husband Dr. Vance Good), grandchildren Jenna (husband Chris Close), Jackey Good (husband John Harned, Jr.), Shayne Good, great-grandchildren Sophia and Ethan Close, sister Patty Leslie, special cousin Shirley Wilken, sister-in-law Janice Long, brother-in-law Louis Chenot (wife June), step-grandchildren Michael Foster (wife Camcie and children Alaan & Ridley), Patrick Foster (wife Electra and children Athena, Ares, Atlas, and Astraea), Sean Foster, Jonathan Foster Jr. (wife Kristen and children Natalie & Lauren), as well as several nieces and nephews.

As per Jack’s wishes, there will be no formal services. Jack was a proud veteran of the Korean War - In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack’s memory to the Troy American Legion Post #49.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Gerald W. Vickery, Jr. Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc. 1093 West Main St., Troy, PA.

A special thank you to the doctors, nurses, and entire staff of the Guthrie Troy Community Hospital for their compassionate, warm, and unwavering care in his final days.
