K. Roderick “Rod” Spalding, 68, well known resident of Troy, PA passed away at home on Friday, August 7, 2015.

 

Rod was born on November 28, 1946 in Elmira, NY, son of the late Curtis E. and Marian Mae (Greenough) Spalding.  He was a graduate of Troy High School, Class of   1964.  During and after high school Rod worked for Calkins Motors until he had the chance to buy the local Jeep and Chevrolet dealership named Sims & Spalding Jeep and Chevrolet.  Rod was a well-known local NASCAR racer and raced in the Modified Class both locally and regionally until his accident in 1988 where he was seriously injured while racing at the Rougemont, North Carolina Speedway.  One of his biggest achievements was helping found The Spalding Foundation- a fund for individuals injured in race related accidents.  He was also a member of the Trojan Lodge #306 F&AM and also Scottish Rite.  He was a former member of the Martha Lloyd Community Board of Trustees and was a former member of the Troy Lions Club.  Rod enjoyed collecting and showing his antique cars at local shows.

 

Rod is survived by his sons Terry Spalding of Davidson, NC and Travis (Michelle) Spalding of Columbia Cross Roads, PA, his grandchildren: Jessica Spalding, Alicia Spalding, Ivy Spalding, Brayden Spalding, Madeline Spalding, Ellie Spalding, and Lainey Spalding, his sister Cheryl (Edgar) Wright, his brother Curtis D. (Deborah) Spalding, Sr., several nieces and nephews, his former wife Jeanette Case, his special friend and care giver Nancy Schoonover, and his close friends Jim Blackwell and Ray McClure.  Rod was preceded in death by his parents.

 

Family and friends are welcome to gather from 11:00 am – 12:45 pm on Thursday, August 13, 2015 at the Gerald W. Vickery, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc. 1093 West Main Street Troy, PA. The Masonic service by Rod’s brothers from Trojan Lodge will begin at 12:45 pm.  The funeral service to celebrate Rod’s life will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, August 13th at the funeral home.  Burial will be private and at the convenience of Rod’s family in Glenwood Cemetery. 

 

Memorial contributions may be made in Rod’s memory to The Spalding Foundation, Inc. 1074 Sulpher Springs Road Owego, NY 13827.
