John E. Gilmore

John E. Gilmore, 85, of Troy, PA, passed away on February 4, 2016.  Born on May 27, 1930, in Auburn, NY, he grew up in Seneca Falls, graduating from Mynderse Academy.  He is survived by Julia Carter Gilmore, his childhood sweetheart and wife of 63 years; children David (Trisha) Gilmore, Julie (Chris) Crandell, and Becky (Wendell) Watkins; grandchildren Bill, Matthew, Lizzie, Hannah, Kristine, Nick, Doug, Lonnie, and Jason; and great-grandchildren Connor, Olivia, Juliet, and Violet; and sister Molly (David) Nikodem.  He was preceded in death by his parents, John Joseph and Margaret Hayes Gilmore.  

John served four years in the Navy, stationed at the submarine base in Groton, Connecticut.  After graduating from LeMoyne College with a Bachelor of Science and Syracuse University with a Masters in Social Work, John worked in facilities providing care for the mentally and physically handicapped, eventually directing centers in Pennsylvania, Florida, Connecticut, Oregon, and the Central Peninsula Counseling Service in Kenai, Alaska, from which he retired in 1992.

John was an accomplished home chef and an avid follower of news and politics.  He also had a passion for American history.  His greatest joy in life was his family and his pets.  

Per John's wishes, no funeral service will be held.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the humane society of your choice.  The Gerald W. Vickery, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc. 1093 West Main Street Troy, PA has been entrusted with the arrangements.
