Hazel G. (Barnes) Benson

Hazel G. (Barnes) Benson, 94, of Troy, PA passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at the Robert Packer Hospital.  She was the loving wife of Laurence G. Benson, Jr. who passed away on January 30, 1993.  The couple had 50 happy years together.

Hazel was born on May 2, 1922 in Canton, PA, daughter of the late Oscar A. and Mary G. Barnes.  She worked very hard throughout her life.  Hazel worked for A&P Market, the silk factory in Troy, the Laundry department of Troy Hospital, Paper Magic, the Troy Penny Saver, and cleaned houses for families in Troy.  She attended Sylvania Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Troy Fire Company’s Ladies Auxiliary. 

Hazel is survived by her children: Rick (Sandy) Benson of Troy, Harold (Marsha) Benson of Canton, Betty Hartford of Elmira, and Roger Benson of Troy, 5 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Laurence, several brothers and sisters, and son-in-law Michael Hartford.

Family and friends are welcome to call from 10:00-11:00 am on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at the Gerald W. Vickery, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc. 1093 West Main Street Troy, PA.  The memorial service to honor Hazel’s life will be held at the conclusion of the visitation at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will private and in Glenwood Cemetery.
