Harold P. Wakely

Harold P. Wakely, 88, of East Smithfield, PA, passed away on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at the Skilled Nursing Unit at Towanda Memorial Hospital.  He was the loving husband of Helen (Harris) Wakely.  The couple married   and had 64 happy years together.

Harold was born on October 10, 1927 in East Smithfield, PA, son of the late Phelps and Laura (Riggs) Wakely.  He was a graduate of East Smithfield Township School, Class of 1945.  Harold was a lifelong farmer and also worked at Westinghouse in Elmira, NY.  He is a well-known school bus driver in East Smithfield, having driven for over 40 years and taken 3 generations of children to school.  He was a member of the East Smithfield Fire Company and Ambulance, the East Smithfield Coffee Club, he enjoyed square dancing, bowling, Euchre, hunting and the outdoors.  Harold also enjoyed playing horseshoes, softball, rooting for his favorite football teams; the Penn State Nitttany Lions and Washington Redskins, and his favorite baseball team the Atlanta Braves.  He loved spending time with his family and friends, especially when they would picnic at the pond.

Harold is survived by his loving wife Helen, his children: Connie (Chuck) Daniels of Ridgebury, PA, Remona (Don) Vandergrift of East Smithfield, Kathy (Ron) Humphrey of State College, PA, Barbara (Rich) Deweaver of Rochester, NY, Lois (Gary) Vosburgh and Brian Wakely (Christine Holcomb), both of East Smithfield, PA, 15 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, sisters Mary Soper and Lucille Jelliff, along with several nieces and nephews.  Harold was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Helen Storch.

Family and friends are welcome to call from 6:00-8:00 pm on Tuesday, January 12th, and again from 10:00-11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at the Gerald W. Vickery, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc. 1093 West Main Street Troy, PA.  The funeral service to honor Harold’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 13th at the funeral home with Pastor Timothy Robson officiating.  Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, East Smithfield.
